Why is my shipping rate higher or lower than expected?
Rates depend on weight, dimensions, destination, and carrier surcharges. Missing dimensions or heavy actual weight are the most common reasons for a surprise.
Shipping rates are calculated by the carrier in real time based on the package weight, dimensions, origin, destination, and any surcharges in effect. If a rate looks off, one of those inputs is usually the cause.
Most common causes
Missing or inaccurate product dimensions force the carrier to use dimensional weight, which is often higher than actual weight. Heavy items, residential delivery, remote ZIPs, and fuel surcharges can also raise the rate.
How to fix it
Add accurate weight and dimensions to every product in your catalog. The warehouse can also override the package size at label time to match what's actually being shipped.
